As simple as the soil

I wish to be
as simple as the soil
beneath my feet—

teeming
with life,
yet softened
by defeat;

in the lowest
of places,
yet forever
unique.

I wish to be
as simple as the soil—

the soil
from which
all life springs;

the soil
to which
all life returns.

I wish to be
as simple as the soil
